Vault 212

Vault-Tec built the Vault 212 on the outskirts of Havencrest as an agricultural research facility in partnership with Dandy Boy Apples to test the effects of irradiated, mutated and bio-engineered food on the populace.

Residents were additionally divided into two groups, Alpha and Beta. The Alpha group was given "clean" food that actually had mutagenic properties, and the Beta group was given only "irradiated" food, which were in fact stockpiled pre-war rations. Initially, the Beta group attempted revolt, and food riots occured almost immediately. Soon both groups were eating irradiated food, believing it was in fact clean. Within months only the Overseer and other senior Vault-Tec staff were eating the pre-war rations.

In addition to the sociological experiments, Vault-Tec staff did conduct extensive medical experiments surrounding treatment of radiation poisoning. These experiments led to the creation of Rad-X2, an enhanced version of the traditional Rad-X drug.

When the first generation of vault dwellers started losing fertility, the Overseer halted the social experiment and focused solely on treatment of radiation and improving the yield of the crops grown in the Vault's hydroponic labs.

The exit to Vault 212 collapsed in the initial blast, and the vault has remained sealed ever since
